A Submarine Fan is an underwater geological structure associated with large-scale sediment deposition and formed by turbidity currents.
In Search of a Submarine Fan looks into the notion of fact and fiction associated with place. It is an exploration of a strange desert landscape in search of the things that seem to sit between reality and somewhere else. The desert has always carried connotations of illusion and false truth, with the phenomenon of the mirage fuelling much of the mystery. The mirage and the medium of photography itself share many similarities, they are both the outcome of refracting light and their portrayal of a truth could be equally questioned. This work is a product of my own disillusion as I traverse a landscape which was once an ocean and now commonly referred to as ‘Europe’s only desert’.
